This study examined father's attendance at religious services and the presence of extended family members living in the home in order to ascertain the effects on the frequency and severity of paternal physical child abuse. Subjects were ninety families who were participating in the LONGSCAN study from 1991 to 1999. Selection criteria required that the child be living in the home with either the biological or adoptive father. Independent variables for the analysis included fathers' attendance at religious services in the past month (yes or no), the number of aunts, uncles and cousins living in the home and the number of grandparents living in the home. Control variables included fathers' age, fathers' ethnicity and household income. The study used a longitudinal prospective design and analysis was done in two stages. Correlations were calculated between independent variables and the criterion variables and multiple regression was employed to examine whether the variance in the frequency and severity of abuse could be accounted for by the control and independent variables. Results showed that paternal age and the presence of grandparents in the home were both positively correlated with the frequency of paternal physical child abuse and also with the severity of the abuse. Latino ethnicity was negatively correlated with the severity of paternal physical child abuse. Two hierarchal, multiple regression models were applied. The first examined the effect of predictor variables on fathers' frequency of paternal physical child abuse. Within the model, paternal age was the strongest predictor throughout each stage. The predictor indicating the presence of grandparents in the house also contributed to the prediction of a father's frequency of physical abuse. The second model examined the relationship between predictor variables and fathers' severity of physical child abuse. Within the model, paternal age was again the strongest predictor of abuse, throughout each stage. Latino ethnicity was also a significant predictor throughout each stage of the model. When the variable, grandparents in the home, was entered into the equation in step two, it was the second strongest predictor and remained so throughout the final step.
