Soil liquefaction is known to significantly reduce the lateral resistance of deep foundations. A review of the literature indicates that load-displacement relationships for liquefied sand are poorly defined with a divergence of opinions and research results. To help improve this situation, research consisting of full-scale foundation testing was conducted to develop p-y curves for liquefied sands.

520 $a As part of the Treasure Island Liquefaction Test (TILT) program, a single pipe pile and a 3 x 3 pile group were tested by cyclically loading the piles laterally after downhole explosives were detonated to induce liquefaction. Excess pore pressure ratios of approximately 100% were achieved, indicating that the surrounding loose to medium dense sands had liquefied. Additional cyclic lateral load tests were performed periodically as pore pressures dissipated. P-y curves were derived for fully liquefied soil and soil with residual excess pore pressures.
520 $a The following conclusions are made: (1) P-y curves for liquefied sand are characterized by a concave-up load-displacement shape where the slope of the curve increases as displacement increases. This shape is similar to that observed in cyclic shear testing of sands. In contrast, p-y curves for non-liquefied sands and clays typically have a concave-down shape. (2) This characteristic concave-up load-displacement shape appears to result primarily from dilative behavior during shearing, although gapping effects may also contribute to the observed response. (3) P-y curves for liquefied sand stiffen with increasing depth and dissipation of excess pore pressures. The p-y curve shape appears to transition from concave-up to concave-down as pore pressures decrease. (4) The derived p-y curves for fully liquefied sand are significantly different from p-y curves prescribed by both the residual undrained shear strength and p-multiplier design approaches. The derived p-y curves yield better predictions of measured bending moment and deflection over a wider range of load than the p-y curves of these other design approaches.
520 $a An empirically derived equation has been developed to describe the observed load-displacement response of fully liquefied sand. P-y curves developed with this equation and used in conventional lateral pile analyses provide reasonable estimates of the measured response of full-scale piles in liquefied sand.
