The goal of this research was to provide a phenomenological investigation of boredom in the workplace and also determine whether a daily structured practice of gratitude, when combined with active acceptance and benefit-finding, would have a transformational effect on occupational boredom. Research was conducted on 6 voluntary participants in the form of 3 weekly individual interviews lasting up to 1.5 hours and daily homework practice of gratitude, active acceptance, and benefit-finding. Collected data were transcribed and analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological psychological method. Thematic analysis was used to determine a transformational impact of the 3 homework practices on occupational boredom. The results of phenomenological analysis suggest that perception of purposelessness, sense of coercion, dissociation of attention and personal will from the task at hand, and perception of excessive time available during a workplace boredom episode are the essential constituents of occupational boredom. Results of thematic analysis indicate that every participant in the study experienced a favorable shift in their experience of occupational boredom after practicing gratitude, active acceptance, and benefit-finding interventions. A newly-established sense of calm about a job situation was the theme mentioned most frequently by participants upon completion of their practice. Active acceptance was found most effective among the 3 interventions at counteracting symptoms of occupational boredom, being the sole intervention that neutralized all of boredom's essential constituents. Though it is easy to dismiss boredom as a useless mental state that should be eliminated as promptly as possible, a deeper reflection suggests that occupational boredom may be construed a signal that a bored individual has not previously determined his or her life's calling and thus feels adrift in a job or career. In that case, the individual would be advised to seek professional assistance (through psychotherapy or pastoral counseling sessions) in order to uncover his or her life's calling.
