Little is known about the relationship between the cognitive and emotional factors of symptom validity. Records of 92 patients referred for neuropsychological evaluation who completed the Medical Symptom Validity Test (MSVT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) were examined and divided into high-/low-risk groups of poor symptom validity. Only the MSVT was able to significantly predict group membership. The RBS scale of the MMPI-2 was a significant (p < .05) predictor of good cognitive effort although the relationship was weak (r =.2). When using an aggregate of three measures (MSVT, MMPI-2 RBS, and MMPI-2 FBS), group membership was significantly predicted (p = .02), although, the aggregate alone was not enough to correctly identify acceptable symptom validity.
