Theory concerning the links between insecure attachment and emotion reactivity is extensive. Theorists propose that children with insecure attachment to their parents are at risk for behavioral and physiological negative emotion reactivity and dysregulation. While the results of preliminary correlational research in infants and adults supports a link between insecure attachment and emotion reactivity and regulation, no studies have examined this association in children. The present research is the first to evaluate the links between attachment organization and multiple indices of emotion reactivity and regulation and clinical outcomes in a sample of typically developing school-aged children. The results of this study indicate that children classified as insecure on an attachment interview are more likely to show elevated emotion reactivity and regulation in terms of neuroendocrine response, startle response to conditions of threat, self- and parent-reported measures of emotional experience, and also show greater levels of clinical distress. Implications for the impact of parental care on children's emotional development are discussed.
