The occurrence of pesticides in the tissues of certain species of wildlife including owls and hawks, has been reported by many scientists. These animals become the non-target species through secondary poisoning, usually by the consumption of prey items that have been contaminated by these pesticides. The objectives of this research were to develop a sample preparation method to optimize the extraction of the organophosphate and carbamate pesticides from the liver tissues of the prey items and also analyze and determine the mean concentrations (microg/g) of the pesticides in the final extracts.

520 $a The liver samples of the prey items were extracted with diatomaceous earth using automated solvent extraction. Extracted samples were cleaned-up by gel permeation chromatography. The extracts were then analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with the mass spectrometry and high pressure liquid chromatography associated with the Pickering post-column derivatization.
520 $a This research is important because of the declining numbers of burrowing owls in various parts of the world. They have been listed on the National Audubon Society Blue List as a species undergoing non-cyclic population decline and extreme habitat loss. In Southern Idaho, where the samples for the study were obtained, the owls are declared as a Species of Concern in Idaho's Conservation Needs. Though many studies have been done to determine the presence and effects of toxicants on other owl species, there have been few studies on pesticide involvement in the population declines of burrowing owls in the U.S. The burrowing owl is a top candidate for further study due to continued population declines in most of its ranges in U.S and Canada. The parameters that would be developed for the extraction and clean-up of the liver tissues can also be used in future studies.
