One of the more recent groups immigrating to the United States has been the Iranian population. It is estimated that a third of this group live in Southern California, and most seem to settle in the Los Angeles area. Little research has been done on levels of acculturation and characteristics of Iranian students in the United States. The purpose of this study was to investigate the background characteristics, academic characteristics and acculturation levels of Iranian students. The respondents included a sample of 165 Iranian students from the Los Angeles Community College District. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected on these subjects. Quantitative data were derived from a self-administered survey questionnaire. Qualitative data were obtained from a sub-sample of 20 student and parent volunteers who participated in semi-structured interviews. Three hypotheses were tested. Hypothesis one stated that there would be a strong, positive relationship between background variables and academic goals. Hypothesis two stated that there would be a strong difference between male and female students in relation to academic and career goals. Hypothesis three stated that there would be a difference in acculturation levels between males and females. Results from quantitative analysis revealed weak support for all three hypotheses. Qualitative data provided additional insight into study results. Students showed preferences for their own heritage as well as the American culture. They spoke both languages, enjoyed music from both cultures and preferred many American social structures yet maintained original cultural family ties and traditions. A unique study finding was the identification of a distinct group of students called "mid-cultural." Mid-cultural is defined as a transitory stage from one culture to another. Mid-cultural students are caught between maintaining their original heritage and customs while incorporating Western values. A complete understanding of this group's characteristics would be of benefit to the educational community.
