Asian Indian immigrants, like other immigrants, are adapting to the American cultural environment. The second-generation of Indian Americans, children of Indian immigrants, are experiencing a unique acculturation process since they have been raised with Eastern cultural values but are living in a Western culture. A modified version of Sayegh & Lasry's (1993) orthogonal model of acculturation was used to evaluate individual differences regarding four predominant acculturative issues (courtship, individual freedom, freedom to select a career, and preservation of native religious beliefs). A sample of 120 second-generation Indian Americans between the ages of 18--37 were asked to complete an Acculturation Beliefs Inventory assessing views toward these issues and the Brief Symptom Inventory assessing psychological symptom status. Between-subjects multiple analyses of variance indicated that the 18--22 year-olds expressed more Western (or dominant cultural) views toward the issue of courtship than the 33--37 year-old participants. The 18--22 year-old females expressed less Eastern (or native cultural) views toward the issue of courtship, significantly less than the 28--32 year-old male participants. The psychological symptom evaluation results indicated that those participants who expressed marginalized (i.e. neither Western nor Eastern) views toward the issue of freedom to select one's own career appeared to experience more anxiety symptoms than those who expressed integrated or assimilated views toward this acculturation issue. The practical limitations of the application of the orthogonal model for this population are discussed along with the need for additional research addressing the potential sources of conflict for Indian Americans.
