The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is tasked with delivering mental health services to a new generation of women veterans. Global War on Terrorism (GWT) veterans include the most sizeable upsurge in women VHA service users in American history (Women Veterans Health Strategic Health Care Group, 2011). This growth highlights the historic lack of veteran research focused on women. In addition to gender-specific issues, women GWT veterans, like their male counter parts, possess various characteristics unique to the GWT service experience. VHA Health Care Systems strive to learn more about women GWT veterans to enhance the delivery of quality mental health services. Answering the VA's call for more women veteran research, this study utilized Andersen's Model to examine outpatient mental health utilization by rural women GWT veteran users of a VA Health Care System in fiscal year 2012. The study was a quantitative, retrospective secondary analysis of data obtained from VA national databases. Rural and urban women GWT veteran characteristics were compared. Findings demonstrated that rural and urban women GWT veterans in the study were significantly different in predisposing variables. Finally, the predictive ability of predisposing, enabling and need variables on mental health service utilization was examined. Significant associations were found with the need variable, supporting predictive ability. Study findings did not support the hypothesis that rural women GWT veterans studied attended less outpatient mental health clinic visits. It is important for other regions of the Nation to be studied to determine if this finding varies by locality.
