A quantitative correlational study was conducted to address the problem that organizations invest in information systems to facilitate incident reporting, but may fail to derive intended benefits if employees do not use the systems as expected. The specific problem is that leaders may wish to improve safety reporting culture in their organizations but have little guidance in the literature to inform their decisions. The purpose of the study was to understand the relationships of servant leadership and transformational leadership with safety voice behaviors, and to learn if one leadership model is a stronger predictor of safety voice behaviors. Safety voice behaviors include voluntary communication by members of an organization to express concerns about hazards in the workplace or to suggest changes that may reduce risks. Seventy-nine adults working in United States industrial facilities or construction sites where hazards may exist completed an online survey. Participants responded to questions about their supervisors' leadership characteristics and behaviors, and questions about the frequency of their own behaviors to speak up regarding on-the-job safety issues or to suggest changes to improve safety. Participants also answered demographic questions. The data analysis supported hypotheses that both servant leadership and transformational leadership are significantly and positively associated with safety voice behaviors. The analysis indicated that servant leadership is a stronger predictor of safety voice behavior as compared to transformational leadership.
