This research project examines a cross section of the Edmonton immigrant population to determine the conflict management processes that individuals would have used traditionally, before immigrating to Canada, what methods they currently employ and their thoughts on using an interest based mediation process. This project examines this information in an attempt to determine the feasibility of developing a hybrid conflict management program that could be used as a more standardized process of value to the different groups. This is a preliminary look at the feasibility of developing an umbrella/hybrid process which uses interest based mediation as the foundational process. Thirty four representatives of different immigrant communities and agency staff were surveyed. These respondents represented the following communities: South East Asian, Latin American, Chinese, African and European. Most respondents were in support of using an interest based process for some disputes if modified to be more culturally appropriate. Examples of cultural aspects that could be included are using: opening and closing ceremonies for the discussion, prayer, community representation, education and role for family members. For some groups, such as African respondents, there are need based organizations that are working with people to resolve conflicts in unique ways, this project would recommend adding a decision making component to the role of the mediator.
