Recent research in pervasive developmental disorders suggests that while Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism may be on a continuum with respect to presentation of symptoms and etiological mechanisms, there may be enough variation in trajectory or outcome to make clinically useful distinctions. In order to examine the extent to which these two PDDs overlap, the current study examined groups on characteristics independent of the diagnostic criteria; namely, on neuropsychological performance. Specifically, this study examined points of convergence and difference on a Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment (NEPSY) between children ages 6 through 11, who had received a diagnosis of HFA, AS, or Mixed Expressive-Receptive Language disorder (LD). The goals of this study were to better characterize the neuropsychological profiles of children in these clinical groups, and to consider the extent to which the NEPSY can be used to separate these groups clinically, as examined through discriminant function analyses.
