The purpose of the study was to determine and describe successful minority nursing student characteristics using the construct of noncognitive variables. The case study design, using qualitative and quantitative methods, focused on providing a descriptive analysis of noncognitive variables that impacted the success of students who were initially Community College of Philadelphia Nursing Program students and through their participation in a collaborative support program, Project IMPART (Improving Minority Professionals' Access to Research Tracks), were assisted to accelerate into a baccalaureate nursing program in preparation for advanced nursing study. Forty participants self selected to be in the study by voluntarily returning a completed questionnaire. A focus group of six participants was conducted along with six individual interviews. The data gathered through the results of the questionnaire and interviews formed the basis for determining and describing the noncognitive variables possessed by the participants and how they perceived these variables as contributing to their success.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The findings of the study revealed that the participants possessed, to varying degrees, the eight noncognitive variables explored: positive self-concept or confidence, realistic self-appraisal, understanding of and an ability to deal with racism, demonstrated community service, preference for long-range goals to short-term or immediate needs, availability of strong support person, successful leadership experience, and acquired knowledge in a field through non-traditional ways. As a result of analyzing the questionnaire and focus group results, three overarching themes identified participants as: (1) possessing high levels of confidence, determination toward reaching set goals, and ability to handle situations that are unjust or unfairly treated; (2) possessing a strong support system; and (3) needing to set priorities due to limited financial resources and available time.
