520 $a Immatures of the genus Cercyonis of the Holarctic tribe Maniolini are compared inter- and intraspecifically. No systematically valuable differences are found within this genus.
520 $a Immature stages of Bicyclus safitza, B. madetes, B. vulgaris, B. sanaos, B. sandace, and Hallelesis halyma of the Pantropical tribe Mycalesini are illustrated and compared. The divergence of the genus Hallelesis from members of Bicyclus, to which it is closely related, is supported by the appearance of its immatures.
520 $a Immature stages of African/Asian genera Ypthima and Ypthimomorpha of the tribe Ypthimiini are studied. The divergence of Ypthimomorpha from African members of Ypthima is supported by the appearance of its immatures. Ypthimomorpha is found to be closer morphologically to the Oriental cluster of species. It is proposed that Ypthimomorpha or its immediate ancestor represent an evolutionary bridge between Oriental and African groups of Ypthima. The immature stages of these latter two groups are different when preserved material from Africa is compared with illustrations of immatures of the four Ypthima species known from Taiwan and Japan. Therefore, the recognition of the monotypic genus Ypthimomorpha without simultaneous creation of a new generic name for the African Ypthima group is not defensible taxonomically.
520 $a Complete or partial life histories of 13 species of the genus Calisto of the Neotropical tribe Pronophilini are illustrated, described, and compared. Characters of immature stages, such as egg, larval, and pupal structures and color patterns, are found to be of taxonomic value. Correlations between these characters and ecological strategies employed by immature stages of different Calisto species are found. A cladogram of relationships is constructed based on combined characters of immatures and adults. The evolutionary history of the genus is discussed.
520 $a Comparison of stemmata throughout Satyrinae shows an increase in size of the third stemmata from ancestral to derived members of subfamily. Heretofore unrecorded faceted structures are discovered in larval stemmata of some African satyrines. Also, contrary to the opinion which is widely stated in the literature, it was found that some satyrine larvae do not have enlarged third stemmata. The evolution of better vision in the advanced Satyrinae is hypothesized based on these facts.
