A review of first-year grade point averages (CPA's), graduation rates, and graduation GPA's for technical dual credit recipients and non-recipients at Ivy Tech State College was conducted. The study sought to determine if the first-year GPA, graduation rate, and graduation GPA of technical dual credit recipients who enrolled was higher than the first-year GPA, graduation rate, and graduation GPA of non-recipients. Dual credit was defined as those programs in which a college and a partnering high school were concurrently awarding college and high school credit for the same educational experience. Technical dual credit was defined as those experiences in a vocational/technical course as opposed to a general education course. The study identified first-time, degree seeking, 18 to 21 year old students who enrolled at Ivy Tech in the Fall 1999 term. That group was divided based on whether they were dual credit recipients or non-recipients. Their CPA's at the end of the Spring 2000 term were compared, as were the graduation rate and graduation GPA at the end of the Spring 2003 term. The results indicated that the first-year GPA was statistically significantly higher for technical dual credit recipients, indicating that dual credit provided a good transition to college for technically focused high school students. In addition, the graduation rate was equivalent for both groups, indicating that the factors that encouraged or prevented students from graduating with a two year degree influenced both dual credit recipients and non-recipients equally. The study also showed that the graduation GPA, while not statistically significantly higher, was substantially higher, indicating that dual credit recipients continued to perform better academically, throughout their academic career with the college.Subjects--Topical Terms:
