The Women BuildSM program is a subprogram of Habitat for Humanity InternationalRTM. The Women Build program is designed to encourage more women to become involved in the process of physically building houses. 520 $a There were three data collection methodologies employed in this evaluation: observations, interviews, and surveys. Observations were conducted in the planning and building phase and focused on the goals of nurturance and training. Interviews occurred during the building phase and focused on all three goals. Surveys were given out during the building phase and focused on all three goals, but specifically focused on the goal of recruitment. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected and analyzed.
520 $a The results of the evaluation included a description of the Women Build program in this region and the structure and actions that helped to support the program. The program in this region provided a nurturing environment in which the women felt both physically and mentally safe. The learning strategy used was experiential learning and many of the women involved in the program indicated that they had learned new skills and would use those skills again. Recruitment to the Women Build program included many first time volunteers, not only to the Women Build program, but also to Habitat for Humanity.
520 $a Overall, the Women Build program is meeting the goals of nurturance, training, and recruitment, at some level, but there are still areas in which to improve. In future years, as the program grows, the program could develop each of the goals by specifically defining and setting targets for each goal. Future evaluations could focus specifically on these strictly defined goals. Future studies comparing the Women Build program to other Habitat for Humanity programs may be beneficial in helping Habitat for Humanity to examine their programs.
