Hospitality management curricula and particularly that of the Hilton College does indeed have a useful past and thus has been a practical subject for educational research. Such knowledge will allow the decision maker to understand what is being attempted in view of what has already happened. The curriculum decision maker would thus be guided in course planning and curriculum design, significantly enhancing the curriculum's value, effectiveness, and appropriateness.

This study did not identify hypotheses. Four research questions, however, were investigated. (1) What relationships have existed between the college's curriculum thought and curriculum practice? The founding curriculum was essentially in alignment with the College's mission and objectives. Curriculum revisions soon deviated from the College's stated curriculum philosophy, causing misalignment and loss of curriculum integrity. This relationship existed for twelve years. (2) What specific mediating internal and external forces have influenced the curriculum? The founding dean's entrepreneurial spirit enabled the establishment of the Hilton College and Continuing Education Center. There was, however, no strategic plan to coordinate the overall direction of the two organizations. The College, a tenant in the Center, supposedly its home, had no pedagogic use of the hotel, foodservice, or convention services. An authoritarian style of leadership did not permit the faculty to share governance. (3) What has been the effect of these mediating factors? Curriculum integrity was compromised early in the College's history. Faculty attempts to implement a new curriculum were not allowed. Bureaucratic and nonparticipative governance caused the faculty to eventually vote no confidence in the founding dean, resulting in his retirement. Only with this action was a new curriculum possible. (4) To what extent has the Hilton College maintained the integrity of its curriculum? Except for the two years following the establishment of the college, the integrity of the curriculum was not maintained for a period of twelve years, 1972-73 through 1982-83.
