Over the past two decades, dendritic macromolecules have captured the attention of the scientific community due to their unique architectures and concomitant materials properties as compared to their linear analogs. With the continued maturation of this field, comes constant vacillation between exploring new applications for existing dendritic systems, and the development of “improved” synthetic methods to make these macromolecules more efficiently, in anticipation of the next wave of potential applications, or for the much more elusive goal of widespread commercialization. This dissertation addresses several recent advances in the preparation of poly(benzyl ether) and poly(benzyl ester) dendrimers and some of the applications they aspire to fulfill.

520 $a Chapter 2 describes a fundamental study of the ability of convergently prepared poly(benzyl ether) monodendrons to self-assemble into <italic>dendrimers </italic> based upon the putative hexameric hydrogen bonded rosette substructure of the cyanuric acid-melamine (CA-M) lattice.
520 $a Chapter 3 describes the accelerated preparation of a novel family of structurally-homogenous poly(benzyl ester) dendrimers using a new orthogonal monomer approach. These dendrimers, which are synthesized at the rate of one generation per reaction and in high yields, show promise in applications were the need for dendrimer size outweighs the need for structural robustness.
520 $a Chapter 4 describes the first method for creating controlled diversity within dendritic structures. This new approach combines the synthetically powerful techniques of double-stage convergent growth and parallel synthesis to generate <italic>series</italic> of large poly (benzyl ether) dendrimers quickly and with precise control over functional group placement throughout the macromolecule.
520 $a Chapter 5 describes a novel family of chromophore-labeled poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers and their use in single-layer organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). Within these macromolecules, energy (both photochemical and electrochemical) is harvested at the periphery and efficiently funneled to the luminescent core that produces the observed light. In addition to devices formulated with a single type of dendrimer, devices containing multiple types of dendrimers with different chromaticities are described as a new approach toward color tunable, single-layer OLEDs.
