A failure of cranial cruciate ligament in canines can cause instability of the knee, pain, lameness, and later arthritis. Extra-articular method was used to stop the looseness and resulting instability of the joint. No. 5 polybutilate-coated multifilament polyester, Nylon, Dyneema, Braided Spectra kite cord, Titanium leader and Vectran were the materials to be investigated to determine the most suitable suture on the basis of mechanical properties. Each tibial location, femoral location and medial location were randomly chosen as a pair site (LF1TB1, LF1TB2, LF1TB3, LF2TB1, LF2TB2, LF2TB3, FM1, FM2) on a normal knee and tested for isometric sites. The CrCL was cut and the joint was then retested using 1mm Vectran at each pair site to determine the most isometric pair of sites. A reconstruction was done using 1mm Vectran at selected pair sites. The same experiment was performed, and the motion analysis system measured the marker locations. 3-D motions of the lower limb from normal and reconstruction knees were compared.

The results of material tests showed that Vectran was the best among the tested materials for the extra-articular suture primarily because of its high failure load and high load maintained percentage. The LF2TB3 pair was the most isometric, also allowing for near normal joint motion while preventing anterior translation.
