My goal in this dissertation is to provide the beginnings of a full-scale defense of philosophical naturalism on explanatory grounds. Philosophical naturalism, I argue, is a better explanation for the whole range of our experience than is western theism. In the preliminary chapters, I outline the central elements of the two world-views in conflict and defend a model of faith that allows for an objective evaluation of the evidence. Next, I defend a functional model of explanation and provide an account of the features of explanation that make one explanation better than another. I then use this account to argue for the superiority of philosophical naturalism. Examining the existence, order, and intelligibility of the physical world, reports of miracles and religious experiences, and the occurrence of evil; I argue that in each case the naturalistic explanation is as good or better than the theistic one.Subjects--Topical Terms:
