Thesis (M.L.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2003.
This research explores spiritual landscape design from a multi-faith view, which is relevant for locations such as universities or hospitals where it is desirable to have one space to suit people of different religions or where there may not be resources available for each religion to have an individual space. In order to determine if current approaches to the design of spiritual spaces accommodate the needs of people from different religions, literature on spiritual spaces provides the framework by which five religious perspectives are investigated and compared. The five religions are: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. The research involves a study of religious literature, site visits, and interviews with luminaries. From this research, several elements are identified as important for multi-faith design. Since this research re-examines the guidelines for design of spiritual space, landscape architects can use these research findings in the creation of multi-faith spiritual spaces that are meaningful and inclusive.
