The research on body image development, assessment, and treatment has been extensive in the last decade, with an increase of studies conducted on ethnic minority samples. Adding to the growing body of literature on minority populations, this study addresses the relationships between acculturation and internalization and their effects on social comparisons, self-esteem, and body satisfaction in adult Mexican American women. Data were collected from a sample from a South Texas urban university and its surrounding community. This study revealed that high levels of acculturation to American culture and high levels of internalization of the white American beauty ideal were associated with decreased desire for a larger body shape, low levels of self-esteem, and low levels of body satisfaction among Mexican American women. The results also indicated that acculturation accounted for a portion of the variance in the dependent variables; however, internalization of the white American beauty ideal accounted for more of the variance in the dependent variables. The findings of this study suggest that Mexican American women are susceptible to the influence of the white American beauty ideal in the development of body image disturbance. Clinical applications are also addressed and recommendations for future study are made.
