New Urbanism relies heavily on pedestrian activity to foster a ‘sense of community’ within its residents; however, when pedestrian activity is limited by a cold climate the achievement of this goal may be unsuccessful. This research evaluates the principles of New Urbanism, to determine ways in which they can become more climate-responsive. The principles are defined through a review of the literature; these are then examined against specific climate variables that are most important to the climate of the northern prairies. From this analysis, recommendations are made which modify the principles of New Urbanism to be more responsive to climate. Most climate-responsive changes come through the manipulation of street layout, the arrangement of different densities of housing, the configuration of builtform and the design of landscape. This research gives the designer tools with which to create more climatically appropriate communities.
