Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Maryland, College Park, 1985.
The purpose of this research was to use the 19th century coverlet as a primary historical document. The coverlet was viewed as containing both some content of its culture and as a product of its culture. As such, these artifacts were studied to provide information on the coverlets themselves, the technology used to weave them, and the weaver craftsmen who produced them. This research also established a methodological approach for the study of flat textiles, of which coverlets are but one example. To achieve this goal, Schlereth's typology of three historiographical traditions of American craftsman scholarship was used. These are "the craftsman and his product, the craftsman and his processes, and the craftsman as a person." Also employed were Fleming's "Model of Artifact Study," and Earl's organizational scheme for investigating the relationship of the machines to the people who used them.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Fleming's model for artifact study was used to analyze 196 Maryland "figured and fancy" coverlets. Maryland coverlets were woven of cotton and wool in the 2:1 Tied-Beiderwand structure, with the majority utilizing two of the most widely used coverlet patterns. Maryland weavers were of German heritage, lived in predominantly German communities, and apparently wove for longer periods than those in other states.

Early "figured and fancy" coverlets predate the introduction of the Jacquard attachment. Of major concern was the question of the weaving technology used to produce these early coverlets. Evidence leads one to the conclusion that the barrel loom was used to weave both "figured and fancy" coverlets and ingrain carpets prior to the introduction of the Jacquard attachment in the United States. Further, the barrel loom and the Jacquard loom were used simultaneously for a period of at least ten years. Patents and advertisements of weavers show that most wove both ingrain carpets and coverlets, and probably on the same type of loom.

Evidence indicates that the coverlet weavers did not suffer the fate of other English, New England, or Philadelphia weavers. Maryland weavers more closely followed the lifestyles of their Pennsylvania German craftsman neighbors. They were well thought of in their communities, owned property, voted, and some held public office.
