Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2004.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect peer review had on writing skills in developmental reading classes at a small community college. In this quasi-experimental study, the subjects were traditional and non-traditional college-aged students enrolled in five developmental reading classes. The two treatment classes were determined by a random drawing and had approximately the same number of students as the three nontreatment classes. All students, in both treatment and nontreatment classes, kept a portfolio of weekly writing samples. An independent grader used a predetermined grading rubric to produce the posttest grades/scores. The null hypothesis was stated as follows: There will be no statistically significant differences on average posttest scores and grades between the classes that did and did not implement peer review. The null hypothesis was not rejected. The study was inconclusive. Further study is recommended to determine whether the use peer review in developmental reading classes at the community college level is or is not an effective learning strategy.
