To investigate the control of V&dot;O2p kinetics, the adaptation of V&dot;O2p (reflecting the change in muscle O2 consumption during exercise) and near-infrared spectroscopy-derived measurements of muscle deoxygenation (HHb) (reflecting the balance between local muscle O2 delivery and O2 utilization) were examined during the exercise on-and off-transient in young and older adults.

520 $a In healthy young adults HHb adapted at a faster rate than phase 2 V&dot;O 2p kinetics during moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise, suggesting that an increase in muscle O2 consumption was accompanied by a rapid increase in O2 extraction. Additionally, a time delay (&sim;12 s) prior to an increase in HHb was observed following the onset of moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise suggesting that local muscle oxygenation status was unchanged following the onset of exercise when presumably muscle O 2 consumption was increasing.
520 $a Phase 2 V&dot;O2p and HR kinetics were slowed in older compared to younger adults during moderate- and heavy-intensity cycling exercise. The slowed V&dot;O2p kinetics in older adults were accompanied by a greater increase and faster adaptation of HHb compared to young adults during moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise, respectively.
520 $a Following heavy-intensity warm-up exercise, V&dot;O2p kinetics were accelerated and the adaptation of HHb was slowed at the onset of a subsequent moderate-intensity exercise bout compared to the no-warm-up condition in older adults. The adaptation of V&dot;O2p and HHb were not affected by warm-up in young adults, despite a similar elevation of local muscle oxygenation in young and older adults, suggesting that the speeding of V&dot;O2p kinetics in older adults was due to an improvement in muscle O 2 delivery.
520 $a However, during the moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise off-transient, despite an elevated ratio of muscle O2 delivery to muscle O2 demand, V&dot;O2p kinetics were slower in older compared to younger adults.
520 $a Collectively, these results suggest that in older adults, on-transient V&dot;O 2p kinetics may be limited by the adaptation of local muscle blood flow and O2 delivery. However, the fundamental control of muscle O 2 consumption may be related to factors other than muscle O2 delivery (i.e. intramuscular factors) in both young and older adults.
