The purpose of the study was to describe the nature and characteristics of community college graduates in Illinois from 1993 through 2000, with particular attention paid to those students who later transfer to university and complete baccalaureate degrees. The general demographic characteristics of the subjects were described, while also identifying factors associated with completion of the baccalaureate degree. Data for the study were accessed from the Shared Enrollment and Graduation Information System database, which consisted of over 180,000 usable student records.

520 $a The problem of the research was to determine the commonalities and differences between Illinois transfer (i.e., A.A. and A.S.) and terminal (i.e., A.A.S.) associate degree recipients who graduate from baccalaureate programs in Illinois. The percentage of terminal and transfer associate degree holders who earn a baccalaureate degree was calculated, along with the average time to completion and the average total number of semester hours earned. The extent to which a baccalaureate degree completion is associated with age, race, gender, associate degree CIP code, and baccalaureate degree CIP code was also examined. Finally, the average number of semester hours earned by students before and after implementation of the Illinois Articulation Initiative in 1998 was calculated to determine any potential effects of the IAI.
520 $a For the eight years included in the present study, 37.4% of transfer degree holders completed baccalaureate degrees, compared to 7.6% of terminal degree students. The mean age for community college graduates is 28.4, with a median age of 24.3. On average, transfer students are over five years younger than terminal students (25.84 vs. 31.52) at graduation, and their median ages differ by seven years (22.33 vs. 29.33). The proportion of females (62.2%) completing associate degrees is considerably higher than that for males (37.8%). A large majority of associate degree graduates are White (82.6%) as compared to Black (9.4%), Hispanic (4.2%) and Asian/Pacific Islander (3%). Transfer students were found to average about nine less total semester hours and completed baccalaureate degrees about one semester faster than terminal associate degree earners. Chi square tests revealed that all research variables were statistically related to baccalaureate degree attainment.
520 $a Based on data for 1999 and 2000 associate degree graduates, the findings suggest that the IAI may be having a positive effect by way of reducing the number of semester hours students earn to complete a baccalaureate degree.
