This study was originally designed to investigate the role of appearance in the workplace. It was to relate to the body specifically. During the course of the research, another related question emerged, "To what extent does more traditional discrimination still play a role within the workplace?". The study was directed by the concept of emergent research as presented through the work of Michel Foucault. The hermeneutic theory of Hans-Georg Gadamer also contributed to the qualitative analysis. The textual material for analysis was provided by two magazines, TIME and Business Week. The period studied was from 1929 (the inaugural publication of BusinessWeek) to 2003. As the material was analyzed, the focus on appearance shifted. In the magazines, there was little material directly about individual physical body appearance. Following Foucault's philosophy, other streams emerged for consideration. They were race, sexuality, gender and status. These streams were observed by analyzing the texts and illustrations of both articles and advertisements. Through an analysis guided by Foucault's concept of the history of the present, two categories also emerged---that of a Projected Ideal and a Presented Reality. The general findings were that discrimination at a significant level continues to exist in corporate environments. When a more detailed analysis was done using Foucault's eventalization and a more in depth hermeneutic perspective, it was found that appearance in the workplace is quite complex. At lower levels in organizational structures there is much more integration than at upper levels. How integration can be deliberately fostered needs much more research.
