The investigation of organic materials as the active component in semiconducting devices has been of great interest for several years. Despite many advances in terms of device performance, there are still major pitfalls in terms of processability that limit their commercial use. This dissertation details the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel oligomeric and dendritic organic semiconductors to prepare functional ultrathin films, with an emphasis on solution processability. Several new approaches to ultrathin film processing are described, including: the synthesis of water-soluble oligothiophene bolaamphiphiles, layer-by-layer deposition of phthalocyanines, cyclohexyl functionalized oligomers, and organic dendron-capped inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals. Sexithiophene was derivatized at the alpha and o-ends of the molecule with hexyl chains bearing quaternized ammonium groups at both ends. The solution properties were characterized with respect to aggregation and correlated to ultrathin film formation using layer-by-layer deposition. The alternating deposition of bolaamphiphiles with polyelectrolytes and inorganic clay platelets was carried out to investigate the structure of corresponding films. A direct correlation between the ionic strength of the solution and film smoothness was obtained. Water soluble phthalocyanines have been used to prepare the first organic field-effect transistors from aqueous solution using layer-by-layer deposition. The devices fabricated showed unusual ambipolar behavior, and the field-effect mobility was found to be dependent on the amount of small ions incorporated into the multilayers. A general mechanism of transistor operation that involved "ion modulated electrical conduction" was proposed. Various oligomeric semiconductors were synthesized containing cyclohexyl endcapping groups to increase their solubility. Field-effect transistors were fabricated from vapor deposition that show mobilities as high as 0.17 cm2/V·s. The relationship between endgroup size with respect to semiconducting core was found to be an important factor in optimizing ultrathin film growth and surface crystallinity. Conjugated thiophene dendrons with phosphonic acid groups at the focal point were synthesized that act as "electroactive surfactants" for the capping of inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals. The composite structures were characterized and found to exhibit photoexcited electron transfer between the two species. Single layer photovoltaic cells with a power conversion efficiency of 0.25% were demonstrated. This dissertation describes unique approaches to the manipulation of structures of organic semiconductors tailored for a specific function. The synthesis, characterization, ultrathin film formation, and processing strategies that lead to specific device applications are described.
