This study examined gender differences concerning the use and perceived usefulness of email and instant messaging software. A sample of students in the Business Information Systems Department at Utah State University was surveyed on how frequently they used email and instant messaging. Participants were also asked to rate both media in terms of usefulness using a scale based on previous research by Davis (1986, 1989).

520 $a The survey collected information on use and perceived usefulness when communicating with people who were geographically close and geographically distant. The findings provide supportive evidence that women perceived email as more useful than men did when communicating with people who were geographically distant. Aside from that difference, this study suggests that male and female college students use and perceive email and instant messaging in a similar manner. There was no supporting evidence to show a statistically significant difference between men and women perceptions of email or instant messaging usefulness and frequency of use when communicating with people who were geographically close. There was also no supporting evidence to show a statistically significant difference of usefulness perceptions between men and women when using instant messaging for communicating with people who were geographically distant.
