The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the theology of Acts while taking seriously the status of the writing as ancient historiography. The dissertation addresses the questions: What does it mean to speak of theology in a historiographical work? How can this theology be apprehended? What does this theology have to do with the overall character of the writing and with how the writing functioned for its original audience? Acts 19 is used both to generate answers to these questions and to serve as a case study for how the relationship between theology and historiography is exhibited in the Acts narrative. Given that historiography is a narrative form of writing, an investigation of theology in a historiographical work must have a narrative focus.

Chapter one discusses theology and historiography as they have been understood in past scholarship and lays the groundwork for how they are to be understood in this project. The tradition of the study of Lukan theology is examined to show its deficiencies, and a proposal is presented as to how the theology of Acts can be studied more suitably. The notion of historiography is introduced, and it is shown why a focus on historiography is helpful for the study of the theology of Acts.

Chapter two presents a case for using Acts 19 in the study of the theology of Acts. It is demonstrated that, despite the neglect of Acts 19 in the study of Lukan theology, the chapter has a rich theological texture and is an excellent choice of passage on which to focus.

Chapter three presents a reading of Acts 19. The overall placement and thematic function of the chapter is examined, and each individual episode of the narrative is studied individually.

Chapter four builds on chapter three to produce an understanding of Acts 19 as a theological narrative and to think more generally about what it means to speak of theology in Acts. Of particular interest is the question of how historiography and theology work together.

Chapter five presents some reflections about the implications of the study for contemporary theological reflection about history.
