Man has used evolution as a tool for centuries, the earliest example being the breeding of crops and animals. Within the past 15 years, techniques have emerged that enable the cell-free evolution of DNA, RNA, and protein macromolecules for various functions, ranging from binding specificity to catalytic activity.

520 $a This thesis reports the design and implementation of DNA Display, a method for the evolution of small-molecule populations produced by synthetic organic chemistry. The technique imparts an artificial genetic code upon small molecules, enabling their reproduction and breeding. DNA Display was successfully used to evolve a library of one million non-natural peptides for binding to a protein target. The process is simple and inexpensive, making small-molecule discovery widely accessible.
