520 $a Like other American Protestants of the day, Lutherans grappled with the issue of the Bible's nature and authority. Many American Lutherans affirmed the Bible's verbal inspiration and inerrancy. In this regard, American Lutherans and Protestant Fundamentalists shared a common understanding of the Bible. Jacobs and other Neo-Lutherans, however, challenged this understanding. For Jacobs, any assertion of biblical inerrancy was intellectually indefensible. Instead, he grounded the Bible's authority in its religious message. This approach reflected Jacobs's appropriation of the Erlangen theology as well as Luther's distinction between the Word of God and the Scriptures. Jacobs then urged American Lutherans to adopt such an understanding.
520 $a This study is divided into six sections. The introduction provides a brief biographical sketch of Jacobs as a Lutheran pastor, theologian, and seminary professor and president. Chapter one documents the extent to which biblical fundamentalism manifested itself among American Lutherans between 1910-1940. Chapter two focuses on Jacobs's understanding of biblical authority in light of the Christian tradition, Luther's concept of the Word of God, and biblical criticism. Chapters three and four chronicle Jacobs's involvement in his denomination's conversations with two American Lutheran church bodies that embraced biblical inerrancy. In these discussions, Jacobs staunchly opposed their biblical fundamentalism. Furthermore, Jacobs authored an important statement on the Word of God and the Scriptures which he insisted reflected a Lutheran understanding of biblical authority. While both Lutheran churches rejected Jacobs's statement, this study's conclusion notes that his denomination eventually adopted it. The conclusion also assesses the subsequent influence of Jacobs's statement and labors upon American Lutheran understandings of the Bible.
