This study examined the effects of the length of work and rest intervals on selected physiological parameters during constant slope high intensity intermittent treadmill running. Nine males aged 20--35 years completed a continuous maximal treadmill test to determine their maximum oxygen uptake (V˙O2max), and their velocity at maximum oxygen uptake (vV˙O 2max). Following the determination of V˙O2max, subjects performed 4 different sessions on the treadmill in randomly assigned order, consisting of three intermittent runs and 1 continuous run. The intermittent runs utilized a 2:1 work to rest ratio performed at intensities of 100%, and 50% vV˙O2max, for the work and recovery intervals respectively. Intermittent runs 30/15, 60/30 and, 120/60, were named after their approximate work and recovery durations in seconds. In the continuous run bout (CR) subjects were to run as long as possible at a velocity equal to their vV˙O2max. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed shorter interval durations were able to attenuate the level physiological stress produced during high intensity running p ≤ 0.05.
