Educational programming at the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) has historically represented the standard to which other union's compared themselves. This study focuses on these flagship programs over the 80-year history of the Education Department at the ILGWU. Specifically, it discusses how the union defined these educational programs, and the extent to which rank-and-file women were influenced by their participation in such programming.

520 $a The study of such an organization offers today's unions, scholars, and other interested parties a mirror into past successes and failures, and the anticipation of future innovative policies and opportunities for America's working class women. This study is also important because it shows how such women have negotiated their "place" in a society that, for the most part, adhered to the stereotype commonly referred to as the "cult of domesticity."
520 $a In defining this education, I have analyzed a large array of archived primary source documents. Documentation includes manuscripts, newspapers, journals, letters, and bargaining agreements, domiciled at Cornell University, New York University, and the New York Public Library. Oral histories of 24 rank-and-file women add credibility and validity to the research.
520 $a This qualitative study involves the evaluation of educational programming combined with oral history analyses. It integrates these two research approaches to give the reader a clearer understanding of ILGWU education from 1916--1995.
520 $a It is hoped that the findings obtained through this research raise the awareness of educators, historians, and others interested in the working woman's drive for success as it relates to the evolution of the ILGWU's educational programming. The findings are intended to add to the rich history and scholarly literature of what we refer to as "women's labor history." Finally, the study reveals implications that include, but are not limited to, social policy and programming issues for future consideration.
