This research details how a transnational organizational field develops over time. Specifically, this investigation represents an institutional analysis aimed at explaining and describing the formation of the field that I label as the business and human rights transnational organizational field. Through the utilization of multiple methodologies---from conducting interviews with actors from a focal set of organizations to the collection of secondary sources of data---this study represents associative evidence on the antecedent forces and local consequences of formation.

520 $a This research details how a transnational organizational field develops over time. 520 $a Six research questions form the basis of this study. These questions drive the organization of evidence in a coherent manner. The evidence in this case study addresses six primary characteristics of organizational field formation. The six characteristics of field formation involve the following issues: are the organizations embedded in the field aware that they are involved in a common enterprise; have a set of field indicators emerged; has the field's external environment legitimated its indicators; has interaction among organizations in the field increased; are organizations in the field experiencing institutional isomorphism; and are the organizations in the field having to contend with increases in the amount of information they process.
520 $a The findings of this study indicate that a business and human rights transnational organizational field is in the process of emerging. Organizations participating in this study are aware that they are involved in a common enterprise. A set of field indicators has emerged and the field's external environment has legitimated them. Additionally, interaction among my focal set of organizations is increasing. Concerning the issue of isomorphism, which organizational theorists describe as the homogenization of organizational characteristics between institutions in a field, clear signs are detectable. Finally, as a result of the Internet as a conveyer of information, organizations embedded in the field are contending with increases in the amount of information they must process.
520 $a This study concludes with an attempt to broaden the explanatory powers of institutional theory as it relates to organizational field formation at the transnational level. This is accomplished by highlighting two theoretical constraints. The first theoretical constraint---that of a moral-ethical dilemma in organizational field formation at the transnational level---is revealed when gender is factored into the analysis. The second theoretical constraint---the issue of field governance at the transnational level---is addressed by highlighting recent court cases involving business and human rights. This investigation concludes by offering solutions to the two theoretical constraints found in institutional theory as it applies to organizational field formation at the transnational level.
