Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 2003.
This project examined (1) Taiwanese young people's intergenerational communication schemas (ICSs) and (2) cognitive and communication related variables associated with those Taiwanese ICSs as well as the US ICSs identified in Harwood, McKee and Lin's (2000) study. Additional interests were to compare and contrast similarities and differences between Taiwanese ICSs and US ICSs to better understand the extent to which cultural values influence variations in these ICSs. Furthermore, a systematic examination of these ICSs on cognitive and communication-related variables provided information how different components are associated together when a particular ICS is activated. These patterns may inform us the extent to which cultural values function in influencing our communication expectations and intended behavior.

Three studies were proposed. The first study involved soliciting Taiwanese ICSs. Different types of people-in-situation scenarios were used to prompt interviewees' cognitive structures of intergenerational communication (Cantor, Mischel & Schwartz, 1982). Results yielded five schemas--- mutually satisfying, helping, mixed feelings, small talk, and mutually unpleasant schemas. The second study used these five Taiwanese ICSs as prompts and examined Taiwanese young people's communication expectancies. Two hundred Taiwanese college students (M = 22.79, SD = 2.13) were recruited. The major findings showed two patterns of association---congruent and incongruent cognitive representations of ICS.
