Symmetric and highly asymmetric polystyrene-block-polyisoprene- block-polystyrene (SIS triblock) copolymers were synthesized via sequential anionic polymerization using a difunctional initiator. The phase transition temperatures of the SIS triblock copolymers were determined by using oscillatory shear rheometry. It has been found that the sample preparation methods (solvent casting versus compression molding) and the annealing conditions employed had a profound influence on the phase transition temperatures of the highly asymmetric block copolymers that undergo lattice disordering/ordering transition (LDOT) followed by demicellization/micellization transition (DMT), but little effect on the order-disorder transition temperature (TODT ) of compositionally symmetric block copolymers. The existence of disordered micelles at LDOT temperature (TLDOT) < T < DMT temperature (TDMT) was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Also, a phase diagram of binary blends consisting of the SIS triblock copolymer and a low-molecular-weight polystyrene, constructed via oscillatory shear rheometry and cloud point measurement, has shown a region where disordered micelles exist over a certain range of blend composition.

520 $a A series of ABC-type triblock copolymers consisting of polystyrene (PS), polyisoprene (PI), and polybutadiene (PB), were synthesized via sequential anionic polymerization by varying microstructures of PB block and block sequences. The effect of the microstructure of PB block on the phase transition temperature of polyisoprene-block-polystyrene-block-polybutadiene (ISB triblock) copolymer keeping the total molecular weight approximately the same was investigated using oscillatory shear rheometry. It has been found that the ISB triblock copolymer having a predominantly 1,2-addition in PB (PB1,2) block has a higher TODT than the ISB triblock copolymer having a predominantly 1,4-addition in PB (PB1,4) block. This experimental finding is supported by using cloud point measurement where the binodal curve of PS/PB1,2 blends lies above that of PS/PB1,4 blends. Also, the effect of block sequence in ISB triblock, polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polybutadiene (SIB triblock), and polystyrene-block-polybutadiene- block-polyisoprene (SBI triblock) copolymers having approximately the same block composition and the same molecular weight was investigated.
