Current QUS methods to detect BMD focus on cancellous bone whose varying compositions of red and yellow marrow makes readings inaccurate A new QUS technique focuses on the diaphysis of cortical bone and uses the yellow marrow as an impedance mismatch. Test objects of known density were used to emulate cortical bone.

520 $a Ultrasound signals captured from the top surface of the test object and the bottom surface of the test object were isolated and studied. The intensity of the signals is calculated, then compared, and a correlation with BMD is expected.
520 $a The intensity of the signals correlated negatively with BMD. As BMD increased, the ratio decreased. The BUA versus BMD was calculated and a negative correlation was seen as well. The 3 Megahertz transducer showed an R2 value of 0.94, which shows a strong negative correlation between BUA and BMD in test objects.
