The accountability for schools to produce better educated vocational graduates has recently been highlighted by No Child Left Behind legislation. As school systems look for better ways to reach students, learning style research may assist educators in understanding the learning strengths and educational needs of vocational students. This descriptive study examined learning style preferences and characteristics of vocational students and academic English and geometry teachers in a small rural school system on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

520 $a Quantitative research methods examined ex post facto self-reporting data from the Kaleidoscope Profile for Students and Educators. One hundred seventy-four students enrolled at a vocational school on the Eastern Shore of Maryland who completed a concentrated vocational program participated in the study. Seven English teachers and six geometry teachers also participated in the study.
520 $a A cross sectional design was used to portray the characteristics of this select population of vocational students. Utilizing descriptive statistics, contingency and frequency tables were run on learning style and end-of-course exam data. The findings suggest that in Caroline County, vocational students and the academic teachers who instruct them have specific learning style preferences. Some researchers believe that teachers teach the way they were taught and others believe that most teachers teach the way they learn best. If either belief is true, findings in this study suggest that students and teachers are in learning style conflict in the classroom.
