Despite decades of theoretical and empirical research, two fundamental questions in primate ecology remain largely unanswered. First, how does habitat quality affect the density and demographic structure of primate populations? Second, what ecological factors regulate primate populations? I gathered data on 33 groups of Bornean white-bearded gibbons (Hylobates albibarbis ) and 13 groups of red leaf monkeys (Presbytis rubicunda rubida) in seven forest types in Indonesian Borneo to test hypotheses that address these issues. The density and group size of both species varied substantially across the different forest types, although home range size did not. Population density was well correlated with the number of adult females in leaf monkey groups, offspring sex ratio in both species, and the inferred reproductive success of leaf monkey males and mated pairs of gibbons. Habitat-specific data on the density and demography of each species suggest that population growth rates and demographic structure are sensitive to habitat quality. I discuss the theoretical (e.g., polygyny threshold model, Trivers-Willard theory of parental investment) and conservation implications (e.g., source-sink population dynamics) of these patterns.

520 $a In order to test hypotheses about whether and how food availability regulates primate populations, I used 69 months of phenology data and 35 ha of botanical plots located across the seven habitat types to characterize temporal and spatial variation in the amount and quality of available food. Gibbon population density was highly correlated with the stem density of figs, and was unrelated to the availability of other classes of foods. In contrast leaf monkey densities were well correlated with the stem density of preferred foods that fruited during periods of high overall food availability. These findings suggest that gibbon populations are regulated by the availability of important fallback foods (i.e., foods that are utilized when preferred food resources are scarce), while leaf monkey populations are limited by the availability of high quality food items. I discuss these results in light of the life histories of the two species, and examine the theoretical implications of the role of different food resources in constraining primate population density.
