In this research, root canal instrumentation has been studied by engineering modeling and analysis. The structural behavior of the endodontic instrument was simulated with numerical models. The instrumentation process was modeled as a material removal process, and the force characteristics were analyzed following the engineering principles of metal cutting operations. The fatigue behavior of the instrument was investigated by experiment, and the critical factors were quantitatively evaluated for their impact on the fatigue life.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Bending flexibility and torsional stiffness are essential structural properties of an endodontic instrument. A finite element model of the instrument was created and the complex cutter geometries were accurately modeled. The mechanical behavior of the instrument in clinical conditions was simulated. The impact of design parameters on the structural performance was quantitatively evaluated, and instrument design guidelines were proposed based on analysis results.
520 $a Excessive mechanical force in instrumentation may cause instrument breakage. A miniaturized mechanical testing platform was built, and the canal instrumentation was simulated with this platform. An analytical force model was developed based on metal cutting theories. The oblique cutting model was significantly modified to accommodate the unique "pulling" force behavior in instrumentation. The model predictions were in good agreement with the experimental results for both torque and apical force.
520 $a More than 50% of endodontic instruments fail by fatigue in clinical practice. The design of experiment technique was used to systematically test multiple factors related to the fatigue resistance of the instrument. The impact of these factors as well as their interactions was evaluated quantitatively with experiments. A fatigue life model of the instrument was developed based on regression analysis of experimental data. The model predictions on fatigue life matched with the experimental results reasonably well. This model provides a tool for the endodontist to calculate the right time to discard an instrument, and will help to reduce the incidence of intracanal instrument breakage.
