Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disability with a range of outcomes in adolescence and adulthood that may be predicted by functional language and intellectual functioning at about 5 or 6 years. Joint attention, imitation, and object play are behaviors that typically emerge towards the end of the first year. These social cognitive behaviors are associated with subsequent language and cognitive development in typically developing children but are frequently impaired among children with ASD. In this study, the extent to which these early social cognitive behaviors predict preschool language and intellectual outcomes between 3--7 years was investigated via retrospective home video analysis. Home videos from 29 children with ASD were content coded and edited so that each child had 10 minutes of high quality footage. Footage from 27 children featuring scenes of the child between 9--12 months and footage from 18 featuring scenes between 15--18 months were compiled. Sixteen children had video footages at both time periods. Based on video observations, the investigator counted occurrences and rated the quality of joint attention, imitation, and complex object play behaviors. Results indicate that the frequency of occurrences of higher level initiation of joint attention behaviors at 15--18 months was associated with preschool language outcomes measured by the Communication subscale of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. Likewise, the frequency of joint attention and object play occurrences at 15--18 months were predictive of categorized preschool intellectual outcomes. These findings, when interpreted in the light of other predictive and concurrent associations between the variables, lend support to an integrated transactional model of development among children with ASD.
