Reflectiveness in journal writing, i.e., the textual embodiment of a person's reflective process, is explored in this project. The study focuses on the way journal excerpts are perceived by readers, and how writers express their reflective thinking in such texts. A corpus of journal excerpts was analyzed by means of two major components: (a) an assessment of the perceptual attributes of the excerpts according to functional parameters of reflectiveness, and (b) an analysis of the main linguistic constituents characterizing journal writing in general, and sub-types of journal excerpts in particular.

520 $a The perceptual component of the study relies on readers' rating of texts using twelve parameters of reflectiveness. A clustering analysis of these data allowed the identification of four sub-groups of journal excerpts: (1) factual-descriptive, (2) personal viewpoints, (3) evaluative, and (4) self-expressive.
520 $a The aforementioned clusters were subsequently analyzed in terms of their linguistic composition. Data regarding the overall linguistic profile of the texts was obtained by means of corpus-based techniques, yielding information regarding the frequency, distribution, and collocational patterns of lexical and grammatical items. Frequent and marked features served as predictor variables to determine the linguistic dimensions along which the clusters of journal excerpts differ. Such linguistic dimensions were obtained by means of a discriminant function analysis, which yielded two major functions.
520 $a The linguistic variables correlating the most with function 1 were: past tense activity verbs, and the collocations of descriptive adjectives with concrete nouns, first person pronouns with mental verbs, and the first person pronoun 'I' with BE as main verb. The variables correlating with function 2 were: stance markers, first person pronouns and possessives, and the collocation of the third person pronoun 'it' with BE as main verb.
520 $a The analysis of the sub-groups of journal excerpts identified on the basis of their perceptual and linguistic profiles suggests that reflective writing is not a unitary construct. Instead, reflectiveness constitutes a complex construct in which the intention and purpose of the writer may be manifested in a range of specific linguistic and discourse patterns.
