This study investigates the leadership and decision making process of program directors of CAAHEP accredited undergraduate athletic training education programs (ATEPs) in an effort to examine the amount of participation used for various administrative tasks within the program. This investigation examines whether the program director's gender, experience, education, age, and direct supervisor; and the enrollment of the institution and the ATEP, the number of ATEP faculty, and the number of affiliated clinical sites can predict the amount of participation allowed by the program director in decision making. There were 140 usable electronic questionnaires returned out a possible 292, resulting in a 47.95% response rate. Eighty-seven were from program directors of a CAAHEP accredited undergraduate ATEPs with a Clinical Education Coordinator (CEC) position (Survey 1) and the other 53 were from program directors without a CEC in their program (Survey 2). Descriptive analysis revealed demographic information on the program directors and ATEPs. Regression analysis revealed that variables such as a program director's years of experience, the age of the program director, and the overall size of the program are not significant predictors of the types of participative decision making techniques used by the program director. Factorial ANOVA revealed no significant group differences formed by program director demographics (gender, academic degree, supervisor, academic status) and the types of participative decision making techniques used by the program director. An independent t-test revealed that program directors of CAAHEP accredited undergraduate athletic training education programs with a CEC position do differ significantly t(132.714) = 10.715, p < .001 in their use of participative decision making techniques from those without a CEC position. As a result the individual administrative tasks were analyzed with independent t-tests to determine which particular tasks differed between groups. The results of this study can assist in redefining the role and job description of the program director of a CAAHEP accredited undergraduate ATEP. This was the first study of its kind regarding participative leadership in athletic training education. Findings should serve as a baseline for future research regarding administrative leadership and the achievement of tenure and promotion for athletic training educators.
