The American health care system has traditionally emphasized the biological cure approach to sickness and disease. However the dramatic shift in the population is requiring health care professionals to provide care within the beliefs and traditions of the patient's cultural background.

520 $a It is imperative that graduates of physical therapy programs be culturally competent and ready to meet the challenge of a diverse patient population. Physical therapy educators need a tool to measure the level of their students' cultural competence in order to evaluate both curriculum and pedagogy. The purpose of this study was to measure the reliability of the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals-Revised (IAPCC-R) when used with physical therapy students.
520 $a A sample of convenience of 238 students enrolled in the Maryville University Physical Therapy Program during the 2004 fall semester was utilized for this study. 218 (92%) of the students volunteered to participate and completed the 25 item self inventory survey. Two internal consistency estimates of reliability were computed for the results on the IAPCC-R: a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and a split half coefficient expressed as a Guttman Split Half Coefficient. The Cronbach's alpha, .78, and Guttman Split Half .77 demonstrate good to excellent reliability and support the hypothesis that the IAPCC-R is reliable when used with physical therapy students. The mean scores for students on the IAPCC-R increased as they progressed through the program and the majority of students in each class scored as Culturally Aware. The number of students scoring as Culturally Competent increased with time in the program.
520 $a Cultural competence is a skill that can be learned. Physical therapy educators should strive to endow every student with an interest in lifelong learning related to the cultural heritages of their patients and clients. Besides knowledge and awareness students must also develop the desire to broaden ones' knowledge base of all cultures.
