Here, I present an assessment of the impact of hunting by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) on the red colobus (Procolobus rufomitratus) population at Ngogo, in Kibale National Park, Uganda. I confirm that the red colobus population has been declining since the 1970's. I show that his decline cannot be related to changes in the forest structure, and argue that hunting by chimpanzees provides the explanation. Using the VORTEX program to project future population developments under the current rate of hunting I demonstrate that hunting of red colobus monkeys by chimpanzees at the hunting level seen between 2000 and 2002 is not sustainable at Ngogo.

520 $a Red colobus monkeys at Ngogo frequently associate with red-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius). I showed with behavioral observations and playback experiments that despite high chimpanzee hunting pressure on red colobus monkeys and much lower hunting pressure on red-tailed monkeys, these associations are mainly initiated, maintained, and terminated by red-tailed monkeys at Ngogo. The results suggest that rather than providing red colobus monkeys with protection against chimpanzees, these associations occur mostly because they protect red-tailed monkeys against predation by eagles.
520 $a Red colobus monkeys altered their behavior patterns in several ways when chimpanzees were near. For example, red colobus monkeys were seen higher in the canopy, higher in trees, and in higher trees when chimpanzees were in the vicinity. Nearest neighbor distance decreased when chimpanzees were present, and especially females carrying infants stayed closer to other individuals. However, noise levels did not decrease when chimpanzees could be heard in the vicinity of red colobus groups, and changes in behavior were generally subtle, unless chimpanzees were directly under the red colobus group. This might be related to the fact that the monkeys hear chimpanzees often, and because most hunts take place during silent hunting patrols, red colobus at Ngogo might have learned that calling chimpanzees usually do not hunt. Despite the high hunting pressure, the high costs of more dramatic behavioral alterations in response to chimpanzee calls might be too high.
