A comparison between experimentally observed reflections and the predictions of two- and three-shock theories for incident shock Mach numbers between 1.1 and 1.5 has shown that the two-shock theory is invalid close to the conditions for transitions between regular and Mach reflection and that the three-shock theory is not only invalid for a range of conditions but that it does not give any solution over a range of conditions for which Mach reflection is known to exist.

520 $a A new criterion for transition between regular and Mach reflection in the weak shock region has been developed. This criterion is based on the natural tendency of a physical system to minimize its energy. The transition angles for weak shocks predicted using this criterion show better agreement with experimental results than those predicted using any other known transition criterion.
520 $a The equation that describes the shape of weak reflected shock waves has been solved using a perturbation solution, and an algorithm to calculate the properties of the gas behind experimentally observed curved shocks has been developed.
520 $a Analysis of photographically recorded experiments has shown that the assumption of parallel flows behind the reflected and the Mach stem shocks is invalid for weak Mach reflections, and two alternatives to this assumption are suggested. One alternative assumption is that the flow into the reflected shock at the triple point is perpendicular to the shock. The values of the pressure behind the reflected shock predicted using this assumption agree well with those derived from experimental observations for a limited range of initial conditions. Another alternative is an empiric relationship which has been found between the pressure behind the reflected shock and the sum of the wedge and the triple point trajectory angles. This relationship has been used to develop a revised solution for the three-shock problem. The shock configurations predicted using the revised solution are in good agreement with those derived from experimental observations for Mach reflections of incident shocks propagating at Mach numbers in the range between 1.1 and 1.4.
