Funeral service education has evolved from a one-to-three day seminar provided by chemical companies into a multi-faceted curriculum that requires a minimum of an associate's degree. A healthy and dynamic funeral service profession requires funeral service educators and the professional to be able to isolate the specific qualities and characteristics required for tenure in the profession. Given the work environment and tasks of a funeral director, what type of personal traits would an individual need to possess in order to be attracted to such a career?

520 $a The purpose of this study was to analyze and describe the occupational personality of funeral service students, as measured by John Holland's The Self Directed Search (SDS), and to assess the degree of congruence between student's summary codes and the designated work environment of funeral director. The problem was stated as: To what extent is the choice of major by funeral service education students compatible with a career in funeral service?
520 $a The population consisted of 124 funeral service education students attending three different types of educational programs: a community college (35), a university (31) and a private technical institution (58). The subjects completed the SDS and a short demographic questionnaire. The C Index was used to calculate congruence. Four research questions were answered by using a combination of descriptive, correlational, and statistical analysis. Research questions one and two identified the population's Holland three-letter summary codes and their degree of congruence. Research question three investigated the influence of selected independent variables on congruence. Research question four investigated the relationship between congruence and student satisfaction in selecting funeral service education as a major.
520 $a The population summary code was found to be Social, Enterprising, and Conventional (SEC) as opposed to Holland's identified typology of Enterprising, Social, and Realistic (ESR). The C score for the population is 10.73 (i.e. congruence) which suggests a moderate fit between subjects and the funeral directing work environment. Of the nine variables tested for influence with congruence, three (race, self-reported GPA, and education level) were found to be statistically significant.
