ADHD is one of the leading childhood psychiatric disorders being diagnosed in the United States (Robison, Sclar, Skaer, & Galin, 1999). The two primary treatment options, which have demonstrated effectiveness through empirical evidence, are behavior therapy techniques and medication management (MTA, 1999). The purpose of the researcher was to investigate if the severity of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom types affects treatment recommendations made by two groups of mental health professionals: school psychologists and child-focused psychiatrists. The participants, school psychologists (n = 86) and child psychiatrists (n = 81) (total N = 167), were asked to read a profile of a fictional child's behavior and then asked to rate the acceptability and effectiveness of different treatment options. Three profiles were distributed, and each profile varied in the severity of ADHD type symptoms (mild, moderate, or severe) the child was exhibiting, including inattentive, hyperactive, or inattentive/hyperactive symptoms. Each participant was asked to read one of the three profiles. The first proposed hypothesis asserted that psychiatrists would be more likely to select medication as a more effective treatment option than school psychologists. In addition, it was hypothesized that school psychologists would vary their belief in effective treatment options as a function of symptom severity. Specifically, school psychologists would recommend pharmacological treatments for the children who presented more ADHD type symptoms than those who presented fewer symptoms. The implications for the domain of school psychology were a greater understanding as to what factors influence treatment recommendations and allude to the benefit for further collaboration between the two professions.
